Trade Profiles: Carlos Quentin

Yesterday I sort of kicked off this series with my article of why we should trade for Justin Upton. Today I'm going to go over my thoughts on Carlos Quentin.

Quentin has a big bat but has never developed into the star the Chicago White Sox wanted him to be. Regardless he still hammers the ball and provides plenty of power for any batting order. He's now with the Padres and has been tearing it up since coming off the DL. His numbers include a .268 Avg. 7 HRs 17 RBI and a stunning OPS of .924 in 33 games. This I remind you is at they dreaded Petco Park where it is extremely difficult to hit. If you say he's a one year wonder think again, his career line is a .253 Avg. 128 HRs 400 RBI and another stunning OPS of .850. Translate this to PNC Park and you have a very dangerous #4 hitter. The only area he struggles at is working the walk but he also doesn't strike out much so it's not really a big issue. (to view more stats visit baseball-reference.com which I use as my source)

The price for Quentin should be relatively low because he would be a rental player. Think about when we traded for Ryan Ludwick last year (also of the Padres). Ludwick was in a little less of a demand and we were able to get him for what eventually became cash. I think we'd have to give up a little more for Quentin, like a player to be named later who's a mid tier prospect or more cash. So the price of bringing in Quentin to play a position of need (OF) and hit the ball very well and far on this team would be well worth it.

Overall I think there is a good shot that this is the deal we make. If I were to put odds on it I'd say there's a 40% chance this gets done and 5% on Upton. Would I rather have Upton? Sure I would and I'd still deal for him first but getting a guy like Quentin at a lower price could be just as effective but only in the short term.
